Hello, World

What Scry & Multiply is, who's behind it, and what to expect.

This is Scry & Multiply, my personal corner of the Magic: The Gathering universe. I built this site to have a place where I can explore whatever catches my attention in MTG, at whatever pace I feel like. No schedule, no editorial calendar. Just curiosity.

A bit about me

I first played Magic as a kid in the 90s. Kitchen table, no sleeves, no idea what the stack was. I stopped before the millennium and didn’t touch a card for over 25 years. Then, in October 2025, I picked up a Foundations Beginner Box and got pulled right back in. I don’t have a single card from the old days, so it’s been a completely fresh start.

Outside of Magic, I have a master’s degree in math and economics. My bachelor thesis was in statistical modelling and my master thesis in machine learning. Today I work as a self-employed AI engineer. So naturally, I can’t just shuffle up and play without wanting to understand the systems underneath.

That analytical instinct is exactly why this site exists. I’m less interested in individual card evaluations and more drawn to the technical side of Magic: the rules engine, the probability of opening hands, the structure of formats, the patterns hiding in data.

My favourite card

It’s Llanowar ElvesLlanowar Elves . Always has been. One green mana for a creature that taps for one green mana. Pure efficiency, zero flair. Looking back, it might have been an early sign that I’d end up a deeply technical person. I’m thrilled it was reprinted in Foundations, the long-running Standard-legal set, so I get to play with it again. These days I find myself most drawn to non-basic lands for the same reason: cards that look simple but quietly do double duty.

What to expect

The content here will vary. Sometimes it’s probability theory and combinatorics applied to Magic. Sometimes it’s an exploratory analysis of something specific in the game. Other times I’ll build a tool I find handy, document a glossary term, or just write a post about something on my mind. The common thread is that it all lives in my MTG universe, and I write about what interests me.

Welcome in. Let’s see where this goes.
